Register to Vote, Get Yourself Heard
Friday 30 March 2007

On 3 May 2007, there will be local government elections in England, local government and Scottish Parliamentary elections in Scotland, and National Assembly elections in Wales. The closing date for voter registration is 18th April.

As Muslims and as Britons the MCB feels that it is our duty to be fully engaged with the democratic process. The MCB supports active civic engagement – participating in local elections is a first step in reaching our to fellow Britons and caring for our neighbourhoods.

We are encouraging all British Muslims, especially the young, to exercise their vote on 3 May 2007.

Currently an estimated 20% of eligible 16-24 year olds in England are not on the electoral register. We hope you can help us encourage young Muslims to make their voice heard and register to vote. You don't have to be 18 to register but you do need to be 18 to vote.

The MCB and the Electoral Commission have collaborated to send a voter registration pack to mosques and community centres. This forms part of an MCB campaign to increase participation of the Muslim community in the political process.
