You are cordially invited to the next in our MCB ReDoc
Faith, Society and Citizenship Seminar series:
Friday, 18 November, 6.15-7.30 pm
Moustafa Traoré, Sorbonne University (Paris I)
The Integration of Muslim Culture in Great-Britain: From theory to reality
Room S8.08. King’s College London, Strand
All Welcome
The seminar presents the findings of Dr Traoré's PhD research and recently published book of the same title. It draws on case studies of Muslim communities in different cities to critically reflect on the British model of integration and its limitations. The complexity of the integration of the Muslim subculture within the British cultural landscape, he argues, is partly related to a racial and ethnic conception of what a Muslim is. Past colonial relations, contemporary media representations and British foreign policy, all impact of the relationship between Muslim communities, of mainly Asian origin, and wider British society. If integration, as a two way process, of Muslims in Britain implies a partial Islamisation of British society, are prevailing conceptions of multiculturalism and integration geared towards this fact, and public attitudes ready to accept it?
Moustafa Traoré was awarded a Ph.D. in English cultural studies at the Sorbonne University in Paris in 2007. He is currently a visiting lecturer at Creteil University, Villetaneuse University, and at the Sorbonne. He is a published poet, a blogger on Muslim issues. L'Intégrations de la Culture Musulmane en Grande-Bretagne, des principes à la réalité was published by l'Harmattan earlier this year.
