Engaging with the past to inform the present: The Muslim community of London

12.30 - 5.30pm Saturday 1st December 2012

Croydon Mosque & Islamic Centre, 525 London Road, Thornton Heath, Surrey, CR7 6AR


This seminar will reflect on the practical ways in which historical insights into the Muslim communities of London can inform self-understanding and reflections on our faith, contemporary life and associated debates.

The programme will include:

Rediscovering Histories: Muslim Heritage in Britain
Mobeen Butt (Asian Youth Alliance)

Making History: Connecting the Past with the Future
Professor Humayun Ansari (Royal Holloway, University of London)

Recording Elder Memories of the Community
Dr Graham Smith (Royal Holloway, University of London)

The Indigent Muslim Burial Fund since the 1920s
Salahuddeen Haleem (Indigent Muslim Burial Fund)

An Overview of the East London Mosque Archives
Annabel Gill (Royal Holloway, University of London) and
Shaynul Khan (London Muslim Centre)

A buffet lunch and refreshments will be served from 12.30-1.00pm.
