| New UK Islamic Astronomy E-group Launched Fri 26 Nov 2004 |
Following on from the successful 'Islamic Astronomy: Calendars, Crescents and Calculations' seminar held at the Royal Observatory (Greenwich) on the 30th of October 2004, we are pleased to announce a new electronic mailing list and discussion group: 'UK Islamic Astronomy'.
The e-group is primarily aimed at UK residents, although members from abroad are welcome. The aims and objectives of the group include, but are not limited to:
1. To keep members informed about relevant future events at various UK observatories and institutions.
2. To promote learning, teaching and discussion of matters related to Islamic astronomy. These include:
• Astronomy from the viewpoint of Islam, i.e. as another 'sacred science'
• Application of modern astronomical methods to issues in Shari'ah (the Sacred Law of Islam) such as prayer timings, crescent visibility and the lunar calendar
• Understanding the effects of modern cosmology and the new physics on our understanding of God and His creation (including space and time) and the possibility of extra-terrestrial intelligence, etc.
3. To develop links with other astronomical associations in the UK and Islamic astronomical associations abroad.
To join the e-group, please send a blank email to
