MCB Welcomes MINAB
Mon 05 Nov 2007
Praising the initiative, MCB Secretary General Dr Muhammad Abdul Bari said: `The MINAB will complement, continue and strengthen the on-going work of the MCB in this area which the MCB started with research that culminated in the publication of 'Voices from the Minaret' and which it is now delivering through its M100 Project. The task of capacity building of Mosques to discharge their functions as community hubs promoting Islam and facilitating cohesion of the society as a whole is a pressing and significant priority for the Muslim communities in the UK. The advent of MINAB is a very positive development in this context.'

Mosques and Imams National Advisory Board (MINAB)

Press Release

The Mosques and Imams National Advisory Board (MINAB), an organisation founded by an alliance of leading Muslim organisations will tomorrow publish for consultation with stakeholders the Constitution and the first ever Core Standards for mosques and training establishments for Imams as part of efforts within the Muslim communities, to improve standards of governance and leadership through self regulation and self assessment.

While emphasizing that mosques should excel as places of worship, promoting cohesive communities, and combating all forms of violent extremism in society, other key priorities set out in the documents are:

• Increasing the skills and competencies of imams.
• Developing mosques as centres of community cohesion, citizenship and dialogue.
• strengthening accountability and governance practices/procedures.
• improving access of women and young people to mosques.
• providing advice on the suitability of imams and scholars coming from abroad.

The publishing of the Constitution and Core Standards culminates months of intense coordinated efforts by MINAB's founding members; Al-Khoei Foundation, the British Muslim Forum (BMF), the Muslim Association of Britain (MAB) and the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB).

MINAB will now step up work with Muslim communities and to begin with, encourage stakeholders to express their views on the documents and to sign up to the Constitution and Core Standards in a set time frame. In return, MINAB will provide practical advice, guidance and support to stakeholders to achieve the objective of self regulation with the aim of improving provision of services.
