MCB calls for sustained action against the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories
The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) welcomes the news of a long overdue ceasefire coming into effect across the Gaza Strip’s borders following an 11-day Israeli offensive that has left devastation in its wake. As per latest figures: 232 Palestinians have been killed, including 65 children, 1,900 wounded and up to 90,000 displaced.
The ceasefire provides much needed respite from the incalculable violence of aerial bombardment. It does not, however, provide respite from the crippling 14-year Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip, nor does it address the ongoing ethnic cleansing of Palestinians across occupied Palestinian territories or indeed, as per Human Rights Watch, the system of apartheid Israeli authorities have subjugated Palestinians to. Until and unless the occupation ends, the violence will continue.
It is vital at this juncture that we all continue striving for a just peace, one which sees an end to the Israeli occupation. In this vein, the MCB will continue to engage our elected representatives, amplifying the voices, and supporting the work, of our affiliates and holding the media to account. We will also continue to call upon our government to suspend forthcoming arms exports to Israel pending the results of the International Criminal Court’s investigation into alleged war crimes in the Palestinian territories, and play their part in ensuring international law is upheld.
