UK government must build on the momentum generated by this vote
MCB Responds to Passing of All-Party Motion Recognising Treatment of Uighurs as Genocide
The Muslim Council of Britain is pleased to see members of the House of Commons heed the calls of their constituents, and vote to recognise China’s treatment of Uighur and other Turkic Muslims in East Turkestan as a genocide.
It is hoped that by recognising these actions of the Chinese state as amounting to a genocide, the UK government will be spurred on to take more substantive call to action in response to such egregious human rights abuses and fulfil its obligations under the Genocide Convention of 1948.
The MCB therefore calls on the UK government to build on the momentum generated by this vote and bring this genocide to an end and the Chinese State to account. This should include using relevant political channels, deploying appropriate economic sanctions, and pursuing solutions under international law to exert pressure on China.
