The UK government’s upcoming announcement to ban trade with illegal settlements in Israel is welcome, but long overdue.
This is not a matter of opinion. The UK is bound by international obligations, which it has failed to uphold, falling short of our moral and legal responsibilities following the ICJ’s ruling of July 2024, which found that Israel’s 57-year occupation, annexation and ongoing control of the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip violate international law.
The ICJ stated that Israel’s creation and expansion of settlements, confiscation of land, and exploitation of natural resources are illegal. It also ruled that Israeli policies violate the international prohibition on racial segregation and apartheid.
Dr Wajid Akhter, Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain says: “More than 76,621 Palestinians have been killed in the genocide in Gaza, whilst this is a welcome step in the right direction the government must now redouble it’s efforts to ensure those responsible for such crimes against humanity are held to account and Palestinian people have the right to their own state.”
