The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) recently held its 26th Annual General Meeting at Madani School in Leicester, focusing on the theme “Future First – with a Focus on the Next Generation of Leaders.”
The event successfully brought together affiliates and community figures from across the UK, featuring reports from MCB leadership and distinguished guest speakers, including former South African Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool, Dr. Khaled Dawas, and Sheikh Shafi Choudhury, with the dynamic Sultan Ahmed as the event’s host. The atmosphere was characterised by warmth, spirit, and unity throughout the event. Attendees made up from MCB diverse affiliate base came from all over the UK.
A notable highlight was a panel discussion addressing mental health, Autism, and drug and alcohol abuse in communities, showcasing local projects, guest speakers included Rehana Sidat from Jamilas Legacy, Mustaq Dakri from Spinney Hill Drugs, Alcohol and Addiction Support and Hashim Duale MBE from Daryeel Autism.
As the year brings a general election, the MCB emphasized the importance of political engagement for the Muslim communities and the significance of registering to vote to ensure their voices are heard and counted.
Reflecting on the occasion, Secretary-General Zara Mohammed said:
“Today’s AGM was a wonderful meeting, a testament to the warmth of the Leicester community, which played a pivotal role in the founding of the Muslim Council of Britain. Being one of the most diverse cities in the UK, it was heartening to see so many of our affiliates join us.
As we reflected on the current conflict in Gaza and listened to powerful speakers Ambassador Rasool and Dr. Khaled Gawas, we were reminded of the critical importance of our own leadership and partnerships during these challenging times. There is much work to be done in the year ahead, together. As we anticipate the blessed month of Ramadan, we hold hope for better days ahead.
Additionally, we were privileged to hear reflections from the young leaders at Madani School. Our choice of venue was inspired by our campaign ‘Future First,’ which is all about putting young people at the heart of our work. We thank the students for their exceptional and heartfelt words.”
