Assalamu Alaikum,
I have been actively involved in Islamic activities since my childhood. During my time at university, I served as President of the Islamic Society (ISOC) for two years, where I campaigned for the rights and welfare of Muslim students at London Metropolitan University.
I also worked voluntarily with Student Action for Refugees, supporting Muslim refugees by helping them settle and signposting them to colleges and universities across London and the West Midlands. Over the years, I have gained extensive experience in interfaith work within the London Borough of Southwark and have represented the MCB at various interfaith discussions and events.
My ambition is to ensure the positive continuity of the work of the MCB, both internally and externally, while prioritising the following key areas:
Addressing Current Challenges Facing Muslims in the UK
Muslims in Britain today face numerous challenges, including Islamophobia, far-right extremism, economic hardship, and barriers to social mobility, and threats to civil liberties. A structured and national approach is urgently needed to address these issues effectively.
I will work to ensure that the MCB continues to influence policymaking in the UK by campaigning for:
- Anti-Islamophobia legislation, similar to protections against other forms of hate crime, alongside stronger enforcement of laws protecting Muslims across the UK.
- Fair representation of all Muslim communities, regardless of ethnicity or background.
- Better representation in the media and wider society that reflects the diversity of our affiliates and the wider Muslim community.
I will also work towards:
- Encouraging Muslim communities to engage more actively with both local and central government.
- Inspiring the younger generation to pursue quality education, employment opportunities, and healthy lifestyles.
Total Engagement with Muslim Communities
I pledge to strengthen the MCB’s relationship with Muslim communities by:
- Developing a clear and effective engagement strategy.
- Encouraging regular communication between MCB office bearers and community leaders.
- Establishing community support “one-stop shops” in major cities.
Addressing the North–South Divide
Many Muslim communities in the North perceive the MCB as a largely London-centric organisation with limited understanding of their local concerns and realities.
To address this issue, I am committed to working closely with the Secretary General and executive team to establish a stronger and more visible MCB presence across the North by:
- Organising more regional events in major cities.
- Holding face-to-face meetings with members to strengthen relationships and address concerns surrounding North–South representation.
- Reaching out to.
- Strengthening engagement with Muslim organisations and underrepresented communities from diverse ethnic and social backgrounds — including Black, White, Asian, Arab, and other communities — ensuring everyone feels an integral part of the MCB’s work.
Conclusion
I stand ready to support the Secretary General in delivering these pledges while ensuring that these three priorities work effectively in parallel.
I will work to strengthen communication, teamwork, and community engagement in order to better serve the needs of British Muslims and advance the MCB’s vision of:
“Empowering Muslim communities to achieve a just, cohesive and successful British society.”
