We are appalled by the scenes across Republika Srpska and Serbia’s announcement that convicted genocidaire Ratko Mladić will be buried with “highest military and state honours.” Mladić was convicted by an international tribunal for the genocide of over 8,000 Bosniak men and boys at Srebrenica in 1995, alongside the siege of Sarajevo and ethnic cleansing across Bosnia.
To mourn him as a hero and honour him with state ceremony is not remembrance – it is the admission that the charge of genocide does not just apply to one monstrous individual, but to all those who murdered alongside him and those who now glorify his legacy.
Not to punish evil is tantamount to authorising it. We must not let this apply to us any longer.
