As mosques across the UK prepare to open their doors for Visit My Mosque 2024 this weekend, the MCB leadership team was warmly hosted by the Abdullah Quilliam Mosque for the northern launch of the campaign.
Bringing together guests from various communities across the north of England, MCB Secretary-General Zara Mohammed highlighted the significance of this year’s campaign in fostering unity, strengthening communities, and breaking down social barriers.
We were honoured to hear from Imam Ibrahim of Southport Mosque, who shared his experiences of the far-right riots and emphasised the importance of communities standing together in the face of adversity. He stressed the value of caring for our neighbours, especially those who support us when it matters most. The police were commended for their unwavering defence of the mosque, despite the injuries some officers sustained.
The trustees of the Mosque reflected on the rich history of Britain’s oldest mosque. Built in 1887 by William Abdullah Quilliam, the A Mosque was the first mosque in Britain. It served as a hub for Liverpool’s early Muslim community, offering a place for worship, education, and social services.
Its long history stands as a testament to Britain’s deep-rooted relationship with Islam.
Guest speakers also included Muzahid Khan, Deputy Lieutenant for Greater Manchester, and Ghalib Khan, Chair of Quilliam Mosque and Noreen Hameed from Lancashire Council of Mosques. A special thank you to Mumin Khan, CEO of Abdullah Quilliam Mosque, for his hospitality in hosting the event.
This year’s Visit My Mosque event at Abdullah Quilliam Mosque will take place on Sunday, 29 September, from 10:30 AM to 3:30 PM. We look forward to welcoming all attendees and encouraging everyone to invite their friends and neighbours to visit their local mosque.
