The Conservative Party’s claim tonight that “all complaints are investigated without prejudice” is misleading and dishonest. The claim was made in response to Baroness Sayeeda Warsi statement she will no longer take the Party whip. The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) has repeatedly exposed institutional Islamophobia within the Party, but serious complaints remain ignored. We point to:
In 2020 the Muslim Council of Britain submitted a detailed dossier to the Equalities and Human Rights Commission exposing Islamophobic conduct by over 300 Conservative members, yet the Party failed to act on the overwhelming evidence.
In 2024 the MCB raised concerns over Islamophobic remarks by senior Conservatives, including Suella Braverman and Lee Anderson, but the Party once again refused to investigate.
The Party’s own Swaran Singh Investigation into discrimination found that their complaints process was “indifferent” or “abrasive”. Now we would add that it has been politicised as it attempted to investigate a former Conservative Party cabinet minister who has been fearless in calling out Islamophobia within their ranks.
This consistent negligence shows the Conservative Party’s unwillingness to confront Islamophobia within its ranks and in society. Baroness Warsi’s resignation from the part whip should be the final call for accountability.
