Today, British Muslims around the country are waking up to the news of an averted horrific attack in Manchester. If it were not for the diligence of staff and worshippers, the situation may have been very different and fatal for worshippers during the holy month of Ramadan where Muslims observe night prayers in congregation.
We are also aware of the minimal coverage and unchecked narratives of hatred online, in the media and our politics that has continued to spread in wider society.
Dr Wajid Akhter, Secretary General of the MCB, said: “The professional and swift action of stewards and volunteers at Manchester Central Mosque has helped contain this incident from turning into a tragic one. This is an urgent reminder to all mosque teams and committees to ensure:
(a) Security arrangements are refreshed and clear(b) Volunteers and greeters feel confident to speak up if something doesn’t feel right(c) There is proactive, supportive liaison with your local Police teams(d) Worshippers and congregants are encouraged to stay aware, calm, and look out for one another
By working together and being organised, we can help ensure the safety and sanctity of our mosque spaces this Ramadan and prioritise tackling all forms of hate against faith communities. Although the motives of the attackers in not yet known, this is also a reminder to all that hatred of any kind has consequences.”
