The Muslim Council of Britain urged MPs to support the motion being put today to favour Britain’s recognition of the state of Palestine.

Dr Shuja Shafi, Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain said: “Our representatives have a historic opportunity to right a wrong that has persisted for decades. Recognising the State of Palestine will be a crucial first step to recognise the aspirations of a people who have lived and suffered under occupation for decades.

We recognise that the outcome of this motion is not binding on our government. However, we hope that our government would recognise the need to stand firm for justice and take this opportunity to bilaterally recognise Palestine as an independent state.

Let us uphold justice by recognising the State of Palestine, and let Palestinian people live in dignity.”
