The Muslim Council of Britain’s campaign in partnership with the Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust is aimed at encouraging greater political participation within Muslim communities ahead of the upcoming general election.

As the current political landscape becomes increasingly challenging for British Muslims, the MCB remain dedicated in our efforts to support a politics of inclusion and fair representation.

According to the 2021 census, there are nearly 3.9 million Muslims in England and Wales, with a significant number of young Muslims now eligible to vote, this will be their first time at the ballot box.

The war in Gaza will be a critical issue for many voters. In a recent survey conducted by the Labour Muslim Network in partnership with Survation, a staggering 70% of respondents ranked the issue as ‘Very Important’ to how they will vote. The survey also revealed a noticeable decline in support for the major political parties, in response to the ongoing crisis and political decision making.

Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain, Zara Mohammed said:
“For over two decades, the MCB has been dedicated to supporting Muslim communities in engaging with politics. The act of voting in an election is a powerful means of reflecting our collective values and aspirations, one which we must utilise as our democratic right.

There are many issues British Muslims will be concerned about: the soaring cost of living, the state of the NHS, educational opportunities, the climate crisis, and the alarming rise of Islamophobia. However, at the forefront of these concerns is the ongoing war in Gaza. For many, the response to this crisis will be a decisive factor in determining voter preference.

The MCB encourages everyone to register to vote, participate in local hustings and engage in the upcoming election. This will be the most important political event of the year, and for young people an opportunity to shape Britain’s political future.”

The MCB will be supporting several Voter Registration drives and hustings across the country leading up the general election, to find out more: https://mcb.org.uk/features/elections
