The Muslim Council of Britain calls for immediate international action to support the reconstruction of Gaza – a process that must be led by and for the Palestinian people themselves.

The devastation by Israel in Gaza demands a response that matches the scale of reconstruction efforts seen in the aftermath of World War II, when cities like Berlin and Tokyo were rebuilt whilst preserving their communities and cultural heritage. Reconstruction is entirely possible without the displacement of the indigenous population.

What makes Gaza beautiful is not merely its buildings and infrastructure, but its people. Any suggestion of reconstruction that involves the removal of Palestinians from their homeland – temporary or permanent – must be recognised for what it is: ethnic cleansing by another name. Such proposals are morally reprehensible and contrary to international law.

It is telling that currently, the only prominent voice speaking about Gaza’s reconstruction is President Trump. The vacuum created by the international communities lack of urgency on rebuilding Gaza is alarming, especially as this gives rise to proposals that are rejected by Palestinians themselves.

“The world seems paralysed when it comes to rebuilding Gaza, yet some find it acceptable to discuss the forced removal of Palestinians from their homeland,” said Dr Wajid Akhter, Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain. “Our government must take a clear stand against these unconscionable proposals and demonstrate real leadership in international reconstruction efforts. Meanwhile, we also urge Muslim nations to move beyond solidarity to urgent and concrete action. We must be clear: reconstruction without displacement is not only possible – it is the only acceptable path forward.”
