The Muslim Council of Britain today added its tribute to Nelson Mandela, former President of South Africa and one of the greatest campaigners of freedom.

Farooq Murad, Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain said: “He was an iconic example of our time, an inspiration for all those who stand up for freedom and justice, equality and fairness.  He handled accusations of treason and terrorism with dignity and committed resolve. He was rightly known for his pragmatism, his statesmanship and his ability to pursue reconciliation between people. This was all the more remarkable given his uncompromising pursuit of freedom and equality. In this, he did not waver.

Muslims will remember him fondly, and we join South Africa’s Muslims who participated in the campaign for his freedom and the struggle against Apartheid.

We convey our condolence to his family and the people of South Africa, the Rainbow Nation.”
