Foreign Secretary’s failure to condemn ceasefire day massacre in Lebanon by Israeli warplanes speaks volumes on UK’s unethical foreign policy
The Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper, said this morning she is ‘deeply troubled’ about the Israeli warplane attacks on Lebanon yesterday that killed over 250 and wounded at least 1,000 Lebanese citizens, yet fails to condemn it, focusing on opening the Strait of Hormuz. Our moral responsibilities must not be compromised in the pursuit of financial stability.
Dr Naomi Green, Assistant Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain says:
“The Foreign Secretary’s failure to condemn the Israeli military’s massacre in Beirut yesterday, resulting in a day of mourning in Lebanon today, will not be lost on the hundreds of thousands’ of British-Lebanese and wider British-Arab communities in the UK.
“We are tired of the deaths of hundreds of innocent civilians being excused as ‘collateral damage’. We are tired of our Government’s implied position that human life in some countries is worth less than others. We are tired of the double standards.”
“The UK Government must adopt an ethical foreign policy that holds the Israeli Government to account for its continued violations of international humanitarian law, which has become normalised. Elsewhere in Europe, the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is principled enough to call for the EU to suspend political and economic agreements with Israel. Similarly, the UK needs to move from hollow statements of ‘concern’ to tangible action.”
