Muslim Council of Britain AGM: Call for Candidates

Asalaamu Alaikum wa’Rahmatullah

Dear Affiliates,

The forthcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the MCB will be in-person insha’Allah, on Saturday, 28th January 2023, at the London Muslim Centre, Whitechapel. It will be an election AGM, where the delegates (nominated by affiliates) will elect a Secretary General (SG) and Deputy Secretary General (DSG) for 2023-2025. In due course, affiliates will receive an online link to register their delegates. Ballot papers and the voting process will also be online.

In my capacity as Election Commissioner, I am issuing this ‘CALL FOR CANDIDATES’ seeking to stand for the SG and DSG positions. Interested persons should notify me by 10th December 2022 by emailing [email protected].

I have extended the deadline from the 3rd of December 2022 to the 10th of December 2022 for the call for candidates interested in being nominated for the position of SG or DSG.

By this date, each prospective candidate should also provide me with the following:

  1. Proof of British citizenship or indefinite leave of stay
  2. A supporting letter from the President & Secretary of the MCB affiliate confirming the individual’s membership
  3. A ‘manifesto’ of up to 750 words outlining their experience of service in Muslim community institutions, why they consider themselves suitable for the position of SG (or DSG) and their assessment of the challenges facing Muslims in Britain.

Subject to receipt of this information, I will announce the candidates eligible to stand by 21st December 2022 , and their manifestos will be published on the MCB website.

Additionally, I will require candidates to furnish me with evidence from a Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check five days before the AGM date. Discharged bankrupts are also disqualified.

Candidates must also be an MCB affiliate’s delegate to the 2023 AGM and should have been nominated to the NC for election as a nationally elected member.  The elected SG and DSG will automatically be members of the NC.
