In 2018 a YouGov poll found that 70% of Britons had never visited a place of worship other than their own. In the multi-cultural and multi-religious British society of today this must change because just as we visit our friends and neighbours in their homes and host them in our homes, communities visiting and hosting each other helps break down barriers and builds bridges, trust and understanding.
Interfaith work is very important and many Muslim communities are very active in interfaith work, making regular visits to their local churches and synagogues and other places of worship, forming relationships with their congregations and maintaining those relationships throughout the year through regular events. However, Visit My Mosque day is a national day where mosques across the UK time their open days to be on the same day of the year.
Visit My Mosque aims to promote better outreach and engagement work between mosques and their diverse local communities across Britain throughout the year – not just on Visit My Mosque Day itself – as it is essential that long-term relationships grow and flourish for years to come at a grassroots level.
The Journey So Far
Mosques in the UK have been holding open days for their local communities for decades.
As a national initiative, #VisitMyMosque was first conceived in February 2015 with about 20 mosques taking part in holding an open day on the same day. Due to popular demand the initiative has grown to over 200 mosques now taking part, with MPs and other senior politicians taking part too, including the Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition and the Mayor of London visiting their local mosques.

How Can You Help
1. Donate
Both live and virtual Visit My Mosque days require a lot of work in bringing them together – a host of volunteers, educational materials and support – and we continue to look at ways to supplement our resources like the 360 degree virtual tours. These events cannot happen without the support of you and our sponsors. Your donations are invaluable.
- £25 could provide support towards national mosque engagement – to be a part of a nationwide event to open their door together on the same day to counter negative perception by showcasing the great work of the British Muslim society
- £50 could provide support towards breaking down barriers, building bridges, trust and understanding with our neighbours as 70% of Britons had never visited a place of worship other than their own
- £100 could provide support towards developing Interfaith work, forming relationships with different faith groups and maintaining long term relationship to build a better society
