Marking the second annual ‘International Day to combat Islamophobia‘ MCB Secretary-General joined thought leaders, experts, academics and civil society groups across the globe for an international conference in Baku, hosted in partnership by Baku International Multiculturalism Centre and the G20 Interfaith Dialogue Forum, March 6-8th, 2024.
The conference aimed to address “Islamophobia as a Specific Form of Racism and Discrimination: New Global and Transnational Challenges.” Bringing guests from 32 countries, including scientists, experts of international organisations, religious leaders, representatives of non-governmental organizations, including local experts, state officials, and leaders participated in the international conference. The organisers envision it serving as advisory resources and ‘roadmaps’ for nations grappling with the challenges of Islamophobia, aiming for tangible change.
Speaking on a panel discussion discussing the nature and impact of Islamophobia on women, Zara Mohammed shared a message on “Being Resilient in the Face of Islamophobia,” drew from her personal experience as the first woman and youngest candidate to lead the Muslim Council of Britain. She highlighted the challenges faced both in wider society and the negative portrayal of British Muslims and Islam in the media. She concluded with a reaffirmation of MCB’s commitment to contributing to changing narratives and empowering communities, even in the face of Government attempts to marginalise the organisation.
The Muslim Council of Britain remains steadfast in its commitment to combating Islamophobia, standing against adversity from government bodies and supporting British Muslim communities in the face of bigotry and hatred.
