In response to the urgent escalation of violence in Palestine and the alarming breach of international law, the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) convened a nationwide community briefing bringing together community figures, mosque leaders and representatives, and individuals from broader society, with thousands of participants in attendance.

The primary aim, to engage in a critical and purposeful dialogue surrounding the ever-pressing humanitarian crisis in Palestine, marked by violations of international law and a pathway to resolution.

The event, featured distinguished guests, including the Palestinian Ambassador to the UK, Dr. Husam Zomlot, and renowned international human rights lawyer, Mr Tayab Ali

Ambassador Zomlot, in a heartfelt address, provided a harrowing overview of the dire humanitarian situation currently unfolding in Palestine. He emphasised the impending collapse of the health ministry and urgently called for an immediate ceasefire to alleviate the suffering of innocent civilians.

The Ambassador Zomlot emphasised that the conflict is not rooted in religion but is, in fact, a struggle to end occupation and achieve justice, equality and human rights. All must continue in their advocacy for their plight, raising awareness, engaging with political leadership and civil society where fundamental to this.

The Ambassador called for continued efforts by the Muslim communities in the UK to strengthen relations and protect and support all communities including Britain’s Jewish communities. Advocacy for Palestinian human and national rights is not specific to Muslim communities. Both in the UK and elsewhere, the Ambassador said, there is broad cross-community support for Palestinian rights.

The Ambassador also highlighted the importance of unity and community cohesion in the face of adversity and division. Muslim communities in the UK is advocating for Palestine because of a shared commitment to the principles of humanity and justice.

Tayab Ali, Director of the International Centre for Justice for Palestinians and partner at Bindman’s, provided valuable legal insights into the potential commission of war crimes. He urged politicians to exercise caution with their language, as inflammatory rhetoric can inadvertently contribute to the perpetuation of war crimes. Mr. Ali encouraged the community to engage in pro-Palestinian activism within the bounds of the law and to stand resolute against divisive political discourse.

MCB Secretary General, Zara Mohammed who hosted the event, shared the remarkable impact of the Muslim community coming together to campaign on the international crisis. Over 150,000+ letters were sent to Members of Parliament, and guidance on how to advocate safely reached a wide audience.

The MCB reiterates our steadfast commitment to the cause, continuing to support the Palestinian people and calling for an immediate ceasefire to alleviate their suffering.

The Muslim Council of Britain is dedicated to promoting peace. We will continue to challenge divisive rhetoric, demonisation of Muslims and stifling of anti-Palestinian rhetoric. We will continue to work to foster greater community cohesion and dialogue at this time.
