PRESS RELEASE
Today, the Muslim Council of Britain launched the first edition of its Proudly Muslim and Black project’s dedicated E-Magazine.
Founded in partnership with Everyday Muslim and Black Muslim Forum in 2019, the MCB’s Proudly Muslim & Black (PMB) project aims to celebrate the contributions, history, and heritage of Black Muslims in Britain today, whilst also working to address anti-Black racism within Muslim, and wider, communities.
The Proudly Muslim & Black E-Magazine is set to be a quarterly digital publication dedicated to the people driving the conversation forward on what it is to be Black and Muslim in Britain today.
The first edition, ‘Storytellers and Community Builders’, includes: an overview of past Proudly Muslim and Black initiatives and events and an interview with Khadeejah, Founder of The Black Muslim Girl (TBMG) – an online platform dedicated to magnifying the voices of Black Muslim women globally, in which she talks about the inspiration behind TBMG, what community means to her, representation of Black Muslim Women and rethinking allyship. TBMG has recently partnered with Muzmatch – an online dating platform for Muslims – to produce ‘This Is Love’, a documentary celebrating Black love, changing the narrative on the lived experience of Black Muslim women.
This edition also includes a book recommendation corner, detailing a selection of books aimed at helping readers widen their knowledge of the history of Islam in Africa and the role of women in propagating Islam; a community spotlight featuring the work of project partners Everyday Muslim, and a PMB committee member spotlight, profiling a member of the PMB team.
Commenting on the launch of the PMB E-Magazine, MCB Secretary-General Zara Mohammed said:
“I am delighted to see the launch of the Proudly Muslim and Black E-Magazine, following on from MCB’s Black History Month 2021 campaign, #BlackHistoryMatters.
“The MCB remains committed to improving diversity and inclusion; highlighting the diversity of British Muslim communities and providing a platform for change. The work of the PMB committee has been central to this.
“I know this publication will be an important medium to amplify the voices of Black Muslims communities, and I thank the PMB team, all our partners, and guest contributors for their tireless, vital work.”
